Modern Jazz Improvisation Part 2

Part 2 of Modern Jazz Improvisation examines, in depth, three chord progressions similar to those in tunes by Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig, and Jonathan Kreisberg.  Like Joe Henderson’s “Inner Urge” (explored in Part 1 of Modern Jazz Improvisation ), these chord progressions include both plateau and vertical modal styles, but unlike their predecessor, they feature new challenges typical of many modern jazz compositions:  extended harmonies, odd meters, meter changes, and unusual phrase lengths.

Modern Jazz Improvisation part 2 covers:

  • Brief recap of the concepts covered in Modern Jazz Improvisation part 1 (viewing part 1 first is highly recommended)
  • Detailed harmonic analysis of three modern jazz chord progressions based on compositions by Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ari Hoenig, and Jonathan Kreisberg
  • Exercises to gain fluency through quickly-moving harmonically unrelated chord changes using various techniques:  scale tone voice leading in seconds and thirds, voice-led arpeggios through chord changes, wide interval patterns, triad pairs, odd note groupings, and polyrhythmic note groupings
  • Discussion of soloing on chord progressions with odd phrase lengths, with written example
  • Discussion of soloing on chord progressions with changing time signatures, with suggestions for practice and example backing track
  • Suggested strategies for gaining fluency with soloing on tunes with odd meters and changing meters, with numerous written examples
  • Three full-length example solos: “Sight from St. Petersburg,” “Rogue Bovines,” and “Blackjack,” based on the above three chord progressions, and demonstrating all of the concepts covered in parts 1 and 2 in a musical context
  • Running time: 112 minutes
  • 20 pages of written examples, exercises, and solo etudes, in standard notation and tablature, with close-up views of the demonstrations
  • MP3 backing tracks for all written examples and solos, including full-length track for improvisation practice

GET THIS! If you’re into the modern jazz being played now by people like Gilad Hekselman, Lage Lund, Jonathan Kreisberg, Kurt Rosenwinkel and others alike, this is the lesson that will get you the tools you need to dive into that world. Since most of these concepts are fairly new, it’s really hard to find information, wether it be books, videos or whatever. One is left with having to trancribe and trying to figure out on your own what is going on. While this approach is a tried and true way for learning, it does’nt hurt to have some help, and Lippincott really delivers on the aspects that matter most. This is one of very very few instructional materiasl you will find today on this subject, and for the price, it really is a no-brainer.

I’m a huge fan of modern players, especially Kurt Rosenwinkel and Jonathan Kreisberg. Seeing their names featured here was the main reason I purchased this course. Tom gives you an expert view into their style and an insight into how they "think" the guitar.

Hurray!! Classes for the intermediate to advanced player that actually get to the point, and get to the the juicy stuff. Want to get a true insight into that Rosenwinkel, Kreisberg, Hekselman……… sound and modern ideas? Then you are going to love this. Best material i have seen for years ( I have been playing for 28yrs).
    One very happy customer.

Great to have some help with this type of material. Obviously there’s a wealth of material out there dealing with the usual Real book tunes but very little, (that I know of) breaking down the more contemporary stuff. As with Tom’s other classes it’s well planned and thorough and I’d definitely recommend it.

I’ll second what James wrote. Tom is a top notch educator and player providing information that is not readily available. There is a glut of material on the likes of Joe Pass, for example, but not much dealing w/ the more modern players who have a much more complicated landscape to navigate. These lessons, along with lots of listening and transcribing, will push your hands and ears into some new territory.

Tom provides a massive amount of information in his lessons, as well as play-a-longs. There is a lot to digest, but he presents it in a clear and systematic way. The sound is clear and the camera angles are good to catch fingerings, etc which are important in his lessons.

The play-a-longs are a huge bonus since some of this material has to really be shed at a slow tempo in as ‘real world’ a scenario as possible. It is just tough to simulate shifting meters, for example, without pals who are good musicians, tech savvy to program in Ableton, or a good imagination, looper, and a great metronome. Tom hands you the stuff you need.

This is advanced stuff, but Tom makes it approachable. I look forward to every lesson Tom publishes because I know they will be top notch and will help me get at the sounds I am hearing.

I know I sound like a broken record, but my honest opinion is that this class, like Part I, is phenomenal. It is worth every penny and every minute and hour you devote to it if you want to really understand what is going on with "cutting-edge" musicians. stop going to forums and asking Joe Expert to spoon-feed you for free and do the work for you; buy these classes, do your own exploration, and you won’t regret it one bit.
