This class deals with lines and phrases from this modern vocabulary and is designed to allow you to hear harmony in a new way.

In this jazz guitar class, Sid Jacobs leads in a discussion of how to make and use symmetrical scales. As Nicolas Slonimsky clearly laid out in his famous Thesaurus the chromatic scale of 12 semitones can be equally divided into two, three, four, and six parts. From these divisions are built the symmetrical scales used in modern atonal music. Jazz musicians have found a home for these sounds in the tonal world of chord changes as well as in more abstract free jazz. Fourths and Symmetrical scales are the basis of the Inside/Outside style of playing.
