About this masterclass
Guitarist-educator Az Samad teaches a motive-based approach to jazz improvisation, built around 19 carefully selected motives over a Bb7 chord — from classic swing-blues ideas to Charlie Parker phrases and Joe Pass-style lines. If scales, chord scales, and complicated substitutions feel overwhelming, this class offers a simpler, more musical way in: start from good-sounding phrases and learn to maximize them.
What's covered
- The difference between a fixed lick and a malleable motive, and why thinking like a composer opens up your soloing
- 19 motives over Bb7, demonstrated with fingering details, target notes, and phrasing tips
- The C.A.S. Approach (Chord, Arpeggio, Scale) — a way to map out the sounds available around any chord voicing
- The MEME Approach — Move, Edit, Mix, and Extend a motive to get maximum mileage from a single phrase
- A narrated practice demonstration showing Az's real-time thought process on Bb7
- Transferring the motives to Eb7 and combining them over a Bb7–Eb7 progression
This is a practical class for guitarists new to jazz improvisation, and for experienced players looking for a simpler way to practice soloing. All 19 motives are notated in both standard notation and tablature, so you can study them away from the video. Skill level: Beginner/Intermediate. Full video is 1 hour and 13 minutes. PDF notes included.
