Description
Using the arrangement of Satin Doll (from “Takin’ The Duke Out”), Dom Minasi will demonstrate and discuss some of the ways to incorporate free-form improvisation, motifs and arranging for standards. He and a student will demonstrate both the “in" & "out" versions of improvising and how to create soundscapes and reharmonizations based on Dom’s book, Principles of Harmonic Substitution. Topics will include:
- How to re-harmonize
- How to arrange so it sounds "out of time"
- How to make the wrong notes sound "right" and the right notes sound "wrong"
- How to play quarter tones
- How to play "in" and "out" on the same tune
- How to listen
